Marc Ching is the owner of a pet food shop called the PetStaurant and a local animal shelter. But that is not all he does. He also travels to Asia for very important missions quite frequently. Marc’s aim is to rescue helpless dogs out of underground meat trade.
Marc established the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation in 2011 in order to help abandoned and abused dogs get a second chance at life. His nonprofit organization intends to save as many animals as possible despite all the risks.
In 2015, Marc found out about the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. This event takes place in a small city in the People’s Republic of China each year. The effect this festival had on Marc completely changed his foundation.
Marc says about the festival, “The abuse and inhumanity is so brutal out there that it doesn’t compare to anything here in America.”
After witnessing the cruelty firsthand, the kind man decided he couldn’t leave the poor creatures out there to fend for themselves. So he started pretending as a wealthy American businessman looking for dog meat. Then he tricked slaughterhouses into giving him live dogs as “samples” of the product. Once the dogs have been secured, Marc and his team smuggle them back to the USA where they give the dogs the love and medical attention they need. He has already gone back to Asia six times and is preparing for his seventh trip very soon.
Some cultures still tend to believe that adrenaline makes dog meat taste better. Even though these claims have been proven to be false, people still follow a torture-based process for slaughtering animals.
“This trade is built upon the belief that if you torture and abuse the animal, it makes the meat taste better,” Ching says.
According to the estimates of The International Human Society, almost 1 million dogs are brutally slaughtered for their fur or meat each year in China alone. Other animal activist groups and celebrities have stood alongside Marc in order to stop such cruel practices.
